Atlanta Knitting Guild is partnering with “Halos of Hope”, Knitting Universe/XRX and Elephants Remember Joplin (CeeCee & BeLinda Creech) to focus on the children of Atlanta who are battling cancer. The theme for this special chemo hat promotion is “Under the Sea” and we are asking AKG members (and friends!) to knit, crochet or sew fun, festive and creative hats for kids from 2- 22 with cancer; or elephants and toys to donate to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta – Egleston & Scottish Rite. AKG will begin collecting the hats, elephants and toys in January 2013 or you can choose to drop them off at the AKG or Halos of Hope booth at Stitches South.

AKG, Halos of Hope, Knitting Universe/XRX and Elephants Remember Joplin will plan a “Hat/ Toy Bomb at the Egleston and Scottish Rite centers during Stitches South 2013 to distribute the hats and toys to the children.

Here are the guidelines for chemo hats from Pamela Haschke, President/Founder of “Halos of Hope”. Caps should be made from yarn that is washable and soft (comfort to a bald head). Cottons or soft acrylics are great choices to make the hats – wools do present a problem due to sensitivity issues. Hats are worn year round and needed for the warmer and cooler temperatures. Scarves and turbans are also a great choice for head coverings.

Here’s a handy chart to reference for hat sizes:

Circumference 22”

Infant/Child Toddler 16”

Baby 14”

Child 18”
