Charity Knitting Basics

Handmade items are cherished by people who receive them, not only because they are comforting, but also because they show that someone cared enough to invest their time into knitting it. For members of the AKG, “knitting it forward” is an important way we support the Metro Atlanta community. Thank you for learning more about knitting for charity!

Items such as hats, scarves, socks and blankets are needed by a wide range of nonprofits. Charities that will accept handmade donations include groups that provide housing and social services, medical centers treating patients with cancer and other illnesses, and even animal shelters.  Most items knit for charity are made using relatively straight-forward patterns in durable, washable yarn that won’t irritate the skin.  Look for acrylic yarn that won’t pill and isn’t scratchy, such as Lion Brand, Caron or Red Heart yarns.  To see more recommendations, see this full list of recommended yarns compiled by Knots of Love.  Some nonprofits have specific requirements, so check before you start knitting if you plan to give your items to a particular organization.

Below are links to a few patterns that you can use to knit for charity, but there are many more free patterns available online.  You can make a donation following any pattern that you enjoy knitting!

If you have additional copyright-free patterns you’d like to share, please send a pdf of the pattern to outreach@atlantaknittingguild.org.
