Committees

Most of the work of the AKG is done by members who volunteer on the committees of the Board.  The committees are listed below, and each committee’s responsibilities can be reviewed by expanding its section.

Program Committee

The Program Committee creates the calendar of activities for members, including setting topics for meetings and workshops, finding appropriate speakers and planning social events.  This group also coordinates the logistics of events and works with the Communications Committee to ensure members are aware of the events hosted by the AKG.

Program Committee volunteers have direct input into deciding what events the Guild will be making available to members and making those events happen.  The committee welcomes volunteers who enjoy learning and sharing knitting techniques, who want to help plan and manage events, who enjoy writing and who want to make AKG activities engaging and fun for all members.

Community Outreach Committee

The Community Outreach Committee builds partnerships for the Guild with charities and businesses that share our passion for knitting and fiber and/or could benefit from our members’ charitable efforts.  The committee plans and coordinates charitable activities for the Guild and vets nonprofit organizations members nominate to receive donations.  Additionally, members of the committee contact local yarn stores and other fiber-related membership groups and guilds on behalf of the AKG to find ways we can help and support each other.

Many volunteers on the Community Outreach Committee are especially interested in charity knitting and educating members about how they can knit items to donate.  Volunteers help select and coordinate with nonprofits about receiving hand-knit donations from Guild members and manage charity activities for members. Volunteers also build partnerships with local yarn shops and other business that are of interest to our members, as well as other knitting guilds and fiber-related groups.

Membership Committee

The Membership Committee is responsible for recruiting members and for creating a welcoming and inclusive group.  This Committee make recommendations regarding member benefits and educates members about them. It also maintains the list of members and their contact information.

Volunteers are needed to develop and run membership drives, welcome new and returning members, ensure members are aware of the benefits of membership and suggest new ways the Guild can serve members.

Communications Committee

The Communications Committee distributes information about the Guild and its activities to members and the community through the newsletter, the website, social media and other ways.  This group works to make sure that all members know about the events and opportunities being offered, that potential members are aware of the benefits of joining, and that the community knows about the Guild’s work, particularly its charitable contributions.

Volunteers on the Communications Committee can help by write a variety of pieces keeping members informed about upcoming events and recent happenings, posting on social media, taking pictures and videos and managing both the content and back-end of the website.  Come help us tell the Guild’s story!

Finance Committee

The Finance Committee  is responsible for the finances and transactions of the AKG and drafts and monitors the budget.  This committee is responsible for paying the Guild’s bills for speakers, rental spaces and other activities of the Guild and for depositing income, including dues.  The committee also presents reports regarding the Guild’s financial information to the Board and to the members during meetings.  The Finance Committee is chaired by the Treasurer.

It is helpful if volunteers on the Finance Committee to have a background in bookkeeping or accounting and to know how to maintain simple financial statements.  This is a great way for members to put their professional skills to use volunteering for the Guild!

Nominating and Corporate Governance Committee

The Nominating and Corporate Governance Committee’s role is to ensure that the AKG Board is functioning efficiently and for recruiting, vetting and nominating members to serve on the Board and on committees.  Each spring, the committee asks members to either volunteer or nominate others to serve as an officer, on the Board or on a committee.  After reviewing the input, the committee recommends the election of a slate of officers and Board members during the annual meeting of the members in May.  It then works with the President to assign volunteers to committees.

The Nominating and Corporate Governance Committee is chaired by the Secretary and at least one other director selected by the President and the immediate Past President.
